Truck Drivers Celebrating the Holidays

“Tis the season to be jolly” or should we say “Tis the season to be a truck driver”.   The only vehicle that hauls more cargo than Santa’s sleigh with toys!

While we are sitting home enjoying our families, the truck drivers are working more hours to make sure all goods & gifts are delivered before the Holiday.  Sometimes that means driving on Christmas day while we are sipping on eggnog, opening presents and singing our best version of “Silent Night”.

Being married to a trucker, I can’t even imagine spending my Holiday season without him.  Just thinking of him eating at a Truckstop alone or not being able to see the joy on his grandson’s face as he opens his gifts breaks my heart.  So, can you imagine how our truck drivers are feeling during the holidays?

The commitment to the job is important and it is definitely unfortunate that some truckers will not get the opportunity to spend the holidays with their friends and family; however, there are ways that we can help them celebrate the holidays.

  1. Make sure they are safe and warm, give your loved one a nice warm & cozy blanket for those cold nights just in case they get caught in a blizzard. Surprise them with their favorite homemade soup or a holiday mug for their hot cider.
  2. There is so much technology out there now, take advantage of it! You can Skype, Facetime, or Zoom; whatever it takes.  There is no reason that you cannot share those special moments, even if it is virtually.  I know, it is not the same, but it will make them feel warm & fuzzy inside, but more importantly they will feel the LOVE.
  3. Celebrate with other spouses that might be alone because their loved one is on the road. Our truck drivers are thinking about their children, spouses, family, and friends; knowing they are not alone and that someone else cares about his/her family will make the holiday special as well.
  4. Start a new tradition, celebrate early, YES, I said it, celebrate Christmas early! The day of the week does not matter, simply the love that is shared so do it early or wait until they return home and celebrate gift giving AND a delicious holiday feast.

Spending time with family, friends and loved ones is the true meaning of the Holiday season, no matter which ones you celebrate.  Just because a truck driver is on the road during the holidays does not mean that they must miss all the fun!  Be creative and even though it can be difficult being away from loved ones during the holidays, keep in mind all the wonderful things our truckers do for us.  They are our true real-life “Santa” delivering packages, so let us all leave them some milk and cookies on the table (or in the truck).

Happy Holidays to our truckers and stay safe!
